Having said that, is the next Pope going to be any better? At least the current one is currently doing a fairly excellent job already of making himself ridiculous. Really, I’d rather he just sorted it all out rather than extricating himself from the mess.

Also, and I think this is fairly incidental to the question but bear with me, I don’t think that those who consider themselves to be Catholic blindly follow the Pope in all matter. I’m pretty sure there are plenty of Catholics out there who find the current attitudes At The Top remarkably unpalatable (as well they should).
